On behalf of the entire BOLDplanning team, congratulations to Georgia’s Douglas County Emergency Management Office, along with the City of Douglasville (the county seat) on gaining FEMA approval of their recently updated Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP).

HMPs, as the emergency management community knows, are key to breaking the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage. They also ensure a planning area’s eligibility to receive all-important, pre-and post-disaster financial assistance through the Flood Mitigation Assistance Grant (FMA) Program, the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) Grant Program, and other federal programs.

Approval of Douglas County’s HMP is the direct result of its hard work and determination to actively engage plan stakeholders, identify hazards and vulnerabilities, and, of course, add/update mitigation projects.

For Douglas County and the City of Douglasville, specifically, these projects include but are certainly not limited to,  1) promoting the installation of a much-needed tornado storm shelter, 2) purchasing emergency generators for all water pumping/lift stations, 3) developing the Douglas County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP), and 4) continuing to promote water-saving techniques through a public awareness campaign.

Special thanks to Jason Milholin Emergency Manager with the Douglas County Emergency Management Office for bringing this project to completion.  </
